YY Series Architecture and furniture share similarities in that they express the beauty of structures based on various materials. Inspired by this, we propose the "YY Series" furniture series that incorporates the truss structure pattern of architectural structures into the design elements of furniture. -Y1 Y1 is a side table that uses TPGF Studio's unique 'Y structure' once. The limitations of the Y structure that appear when used alone are supplemented with concrete. -Y6 Y6 is a lounge chair that repeats TPGF Studio’s unique ‘Y structure’ six times. The Y structure is repeated to visually pattern the architectural structure and distribute the load. Similarities between architecture and furniture Architecture and furniture are similar in that they express structural beauty based on various materials. Inspired by this, we would like to propose a furniture series that incorporates architectural structures into patterns and formative elements of furniture. In addition, based on Le Corbusier's five principles of modern architecture, which suggested the direction of modern architecture, we present our own furniture values, 'Principles of Good Furniture'. Background of similarities and principles of architecture and furniture The goal of good architecture is ‘structure, function, beauty’, which are the three elements based on Vitruvius’ Ten Books on Architecture. When designing good furniture, we found that the ‘three elements of architecture’ are equally applicable to furniture. As it has been emphasized since around 30 B.C. that ‘good architecture’ should be sufficiently durable, convenient, and have a beautiful appearance, ‘good furniture’ that comes into contact with humans should be based on the principles that good architecture pursues. Based on Le Corbusier's 5 principles of modern architecture, which presented the 3 elements of architecture and the direction of modern architecture, we present our own furniture values, the 'Principles of Good Furniture.' Principles of good furniture 1. Good furniture shows the aesthetics of structure. Good furniture is not just about external beauty, but also reveals the aesthetics of its inherent structure. For furniture, structure is the basic element for solid support and the framework that forms the functional form. If this structure is expressed aesthetically, the structure itself has a formative beauty. In other words, good furniture uses structure as a formative element to create harmony in the overall form. 2. Good furniture respects the material. Good furniture deeply understands the essence of the material and reflects its unique physical properties. According to Louis Kahn's thoughts, each material has its own form that it wants to become. This is a form in which the physical characteristics and properties of the material can be naturally revealed. This means it has to be created. In other words, good furniture brings out the full potential of its materials. Sculptural design of architectural structures We interpreted the structure of architecture from the perspective of a furniture designer and were inspired by the repetition of structures to distribute load. Numerous buildings we encounter in our daily lives not only provide stability through structural repetition, but also have aesthetic value through geometric patterns. We applied the theme of patterning to furniture design by visually sculpting the repetition of the truss structure.
