Project Description:
Situated in the picturesque Aézcoa Valley of Garralda, the Housing in Garralda project by Nazareth Gutierrez Franco and Rodrigo Nuñez Arquitectos is a pioneering development that seamlessly integrates modern living with historical reverence. This 828 square meter project embodies a deep respect for its natural and cultural setting, while providing contemporary housing solutions.
Design Intent and Execution:
The architectural concept, derived from the traditional Basque-Navarrean "Caserío" (farmhouse), breaks the program into two volumes with steeply pitched roofs. This design choice not only mirrors the vernacular architecture but also optimizes integration with the valley's landscape. The orientation of these volumes promotes a dialogue with the rural surroundings, ensuring each home maintains a strong connection to the natural landscape.
Material Selection and Environmental Sensitivity:
The selection of materials is a testament to the architects’ commitment to environmental stewardship and aesthetic quality. The external facades are finished with white mortar using the SATE system, selected for its thermal properties and minimal visual impact. The use of heat-treated pine wood for roofs and shutters not only nods to local building traditions but also provides a contemporary reinterpretation of wooden tiles typical of the region.
Spatial Configuration and Sustainability:
The layout of the housing units is designed with utmost flexibility and adaptability in mind, allowing for a variety of living arrangements. This is complemented by the cross-laminated timber structure, which not only supports the facade but also facilitates future modifications to the living spaces. The design incorporates extensive natural lighting and thoughtful placement of openings to enhance the quality of the indoor environment while maintaining energy efficiency.
Landscape and Community Integration:
Externally, the project's landscaping strategy includes no defined physical boundaries, allowing the site to merge fluidly with the surrounding nature. This approach extends the living space outdoors, connecting residents directly with the valley's lush landscape. The architecture acts as a bridge between the natural environment and the local community, enhancing both ecological and social interactions.
Bioclimatic Features and Energy Efficiency:
Adhering to bioclimatic principles, the project incorporates features such as green roofs, which provide thermal insulation and reintroduce biodiversity. The design maximizes passive heating and cooling, reducing reliance on artificial climate control and aligning with the Passivhaus standard to minimize the ecological footprint.
and environmental context of the Aézcoa Valley but also sets a precedent for future developments in historically sensitive regions.
