Cabinet Studio Apartment Refurbishment

Project Présentation

Located in the Eixample district of Barcelona, the Cabinet Studio Apartment Refurbishment by Anna & Eugeni Bach represents a thoughtful adaptation of a small corner flat. Initially designed in 2018 as a flexible space to serve as a study and, eventually, a "retirement" apartment, this project showcases innovative use of space in one of Barcelona's bustling neighborhoods.

Design Concept:

The refurbishment focuses on a multifunctional design, incorporating a compact service area that serves as a kitchen, bathroom, and loft storage/mezzanine space. This central "hutch" extends across the main rooms in alignment with the apartment’s angular, corner layout, which follows a 45-degree orientation relative to the street. This strategic placement allows the area to function dynamically—first as a study, and later as a welcoming space for future grandchildren.

Preservation and Contrast:

While the core service unit introduces modern functionality, the rest of the apartment preserves its historical charm. Original features such as floors, ceilings, and moldings have been meticulously restored to contrast with the modern service area. This juxtaposition not only honors the building's heritage but also enhances the aesthetic and functional blend of old and new elements within the space.

Spatial Configuration:

The layout maximizes the utility of the high ceilings and abundant natural light, ensuring that even with its compact size, the space feels open and airy. The loft above the kitchen and dining area is designed to be versatile, serving as storage in its current use and transforming into additional sleeping quarters in the future. The clear separation of the service area allows the rest of the space to remain largely unaltered, preserving the apartment's original architectural beauty.

Material and Finishes:

Attention to detail is evident in the choice of materials and finishes. The use of wood in the loft and service areas introduces warmth and texture, contrasting with the smooth, preserved surfaces of the original structure. Modern interventions such as integrated lighting and contemporary fixtures complement the apartment's historic elements without overpowering them.

Functionality and Future Use:

This project is a prime example of adaptable design, accommodating immediate needs while also planning for future use. It reflects a deep understanding of space utilization, making it an ideal solution for urban living in a historic city setting.

The Cabinet Studio Apartment Refurbishment by Anna & Eugeni Bach is more than just a renovation; it is a reimagining of urban space that respects the past while seamlessly incorporating the needs of modern living.
